SITE LICENSES

Site licenses are agreements between a software manufacturer or vendor and the university to copy and distribute their software. Site licenses allow WSU to obtain the best possible price for these products. Each site license has its own terms and conditions. Some site licenses apply to university departments, while others apply to faculty, staff, and students as a whole. Other licenses are also limited to department-owned computers or computers on the physical WSU campus.

Typically, you are granted the right to use the product for a specified period of time. Almost all academic site license agreements require that the use of the software be university-related and prohibit use for commercial purposes. Documentation is usually purchased separately. Please be aware that in some cases you must agree to discontinue use of the software if the WSU department responsible for administering the contract does not renew or if your association with the university ends.

There are two types of site licenses: universal and node. A universal license has no set limit on the number of users. A node license has a limited number of users. The company usually has established price breaks for volume purchases.

Individuals interested in purchasing any products, or requiring technical support, can contact Crimson Service Desk at crimsonservicedesk@wsu.edu or 509-335-4357.

How to activate

ITS has set up one Key Management Server (KMS) in Pullman to complete volume activation which is available to all WSU campuses. Select Microsoft products are configured by default to look for this service and it should be automatic. Generally, departments do not need to do anything to activate products. However, ITS may contact departments to open ports or modify firewall setting if necessary. This will be on a case-by-case basis.

KMS activation will not impact any existing installations and will only affect new and un-activated ones. Departments can block access via a firewall if departments do not want automatic activation. If a standard Multiple Activation Key (MAK) key is installed, the system will ignore the KMS. For users in remote locations or users who are not in the network, MAK will be distributed on case by case basis.

How to Install MAK Key

Please send the request through your departmental IT group to its.sitelicense@wsu.edu for MAK key.

Terms

  • Maintenance can be added when the license is purchased.
  • Please check details with the vendor.

How to Request

  • Please send a request to its.sitelicense@wsu.edu.
  • Users sign in with their Network ID (NID) and password to access \\ad.wsu.edu\SiteLicense\Microsoft and download software.
  • Only the most commonly used versions are on the ITS server. If a prior version is required, please send a request to its.sitelicense@wsu.edu. ITS will then add the item to the server for download.
