Review the documentation below for instructions on how to set up extended time accommodations within Canvas Classic Quizzes.

Understanding Canvas Quiz Time Limit and Availability Settings

Instructors can set a Time Limit (e.g., 60 minutes) to indicate the amount of time that all students in the course are given to complete a Canvas quiz.

Many disability accommodations involve extra time (e.g., double time) to take assessments. For assessments that are hosted online (e.g., Canvas, ALEKS, etc.), instructors are responsible for setting up extended time accommodations. For assistance with adding exam exceptions to any third-party platform (e.g., MyMathLab, ALEKS, Launchpad, etc.), please reach out directly to that party’s support staff.

Instructors can also use Available From and Until settings to indicate the date and time that a quiz is available for students to access and complete. The Available Until setting acts as an auto-submit feature at the date and time indicated. Once the Available Until setting has passed, students will no longer be able to access the quiz.

Canvas Quiz Time Limit and Availability settings can be set in one of the following ways:

  1. Unconstrained Availability – If the Available From and Until settings do not reflect the same time frame as the Time Limit setting, extended time accommodations should not be affected by the availability settings. Students will need to begin their exam, allowing for enough time to complete the exam prior to the Available Until date and time indicated. If you are using unconstrained availability, you must complete “Step 1: Setting Up the Extended Time” from the instructions below.

For example, if the quiz is set up with a 60-minute time limit and is available to students from Monday at 8:00 AM until Friday at 5:00 PM, a student with double time would be allowed 120 minutes. If the student is granted the 120 minutes, the student must begin the exam prior to 3:00 PM on Friday to complete their exam and receive their full extended time accommodation.

Note: Once the Available Until setting has passed, the quiz will auto-submit, and students will no longer be able to access the quiz.

  2. Constrained Availability – If the Available From and Until settings are set to reflect the same time frame as the Time Limit setting, the Available Until setting can affect a student’s extended time accommodation. It is recommended that you adjust the Available Until setting to allow for the time extension. If you are using constrained availability, you must complete “Step 1: Setting Up the Extended Time” and “Step 2: Adjusting Availability Settings” from the instructions below.

For example, if the quiz is set up with a 60-minute time limit and is available to students from 4:00-5:00 PM, a student with double time would be allowed 120 minutes. If the student is granted 120 minutes but the availability time frame remains the same, 4:00-5:00 PM, the student will be prevented from continuing the quiz after 5:00 PM and will not receive their full extended time accommodation.

Note: Once the Available Until setting has passed, the quiz will auto-submit, and students will no longer be able to access the quiz.

For example, if the original time limit is 30 minutes and a student is allowed double time, enter 30 for the extra time.
Note: The Extra time field is only available for quizzes that have a timer set.

Depiction of extra time value set to 30 minutes.

  5. Once you have set the extended time accommodation as desired, select Save for the exception(s) to take effect.
  6. If the Canvas Quiz has availability settings that are set to reflect the same time frame as the time limit, complete Step 2.

Step 2: Adjusting Availability Settings (If Using Constrained Availability Settings)

For Canvas quizzes with constrained availability, we recommend implementing one of the workarounds provided below to allow students the full length of their extended time accommodation.

Workaround 1: Setting the availability exception for the individual student

  1. After completing Step 1, return to the Quizzes link in the course menu. From the Assignment Quizzes area, select the name of the quiz that you just moderated.

Depiction of Exam selection after navigating to Quizzes.

  2. On the Quiz Details page, select the Edit

    Depiction of Edit button selection.

  3. On the Edit Quiz Details page, scroll down to the Assign section and select the Add Note: Do NOT remove or adjust the existing Assign to settings.

Depiction of the Add option as a subset of Edit Quiz Details.

  4. A new Assign section will appear. This is where you adjust the settings for the specific student(s) with extended time accommodations. Note: Do NOT remove or adjust the existing Assign to settings
    1. Assign to – Here you can specify the student(s) that you would like to add an availability exception for.
    2. Due – Here you can indicate a new due date if desired. When adding exceptions for availability dates, the due date does not have to be updated. If students submit a quiz after the due date, the submission will be marked late.
    3. Available from – Here you can indicate the date that the quiz should become available for the student.
    4. Until – Here you can indicate the date that the quiz should stop being available for the student.

Depiction of values for the Assign section. A. Assign to. B. Due. C. Available From. D. Until.

Note: When making adjustments, it is recommended that the Available from and Until settings reflect the full amount of the student’s extended time, plus a 20-minute buffer to allow for any unforeseen issues.

  5. Once you have set the exception(s) as desired, select Save for the exception(s) to take effect.

Workaround 2: Set up the extended time accommodation for the individual student and adjust the availability for the entire class

  1. After completing Step 1, return to the Quizzes link in the course menu. From the Assignment Quizzes area, select the name of the quiz that you just moderated.

Depiction of Exam selection after navigating to Quizzes.

  2. On the Quiz Details page, select the Edit

  3. On the Edit Quiz Details page, scroll down to the Assign section and adjust the Until It is recommended that the Available from and Until settings reflect the full amount of the student’s extended time, plus a 20-minute buffer to allow for any unforeseen issues. Note: Once the Available Until setting has passed, the quiz will auto-submit, and students will no longer be able to access the quiz.
    1. The Due setting can be used to indicate the date and time that students in the course should have their assessment submitted by. If students submit a quiz after the due date, the submission will be marked late.

Depiction of time values for fields Due and Until.
