Review the documentation below for instructions on how to set up extended time accommodations within Canvas Classic Quizzes.

Understanding Canvas Quiz Time Limit and Availability Settings

Instructors can set a Time Limit (e.g., 60 minutes)to indicate the amount of time that all students in the course are given to complete a Canvas quiz.

...

Instructors can also use Available From and Until settings to indicate the date and time that a quiz is available for students to access and complete. The Available Until setting acts as an auto-submit feature at the date and time indicated. Once the Available Until setting has passed, students will no longer be able to access the quiz.

Canvas Quiz Time Limit and Availability settings can be set in one of the following ways:

  1. Unconstrained Availability – If the Available From and Until settings do not reflect the same time frame as the Time Limit setting, extended time accommodations should not be affected by the availability settings. Students will need to begin their exam, allowing for enough time to complete the exam prior to the Available Until date and time indicated. If you are using unconstrained availability, you must complete “Step 1: Setting Up the Extended Time” from the instructions below.

For example, if the quiz is set up with a 60-minute time limit and is available to students from Monday at 8:00 AM until Friday at 5:00 PM, a student with double time would be allowed 120 minutes. If the student is granted the 120 minutes, the student must begin the exam prior to 3:00 PM on Friday to complete their exam and receive their full extended time accommodation.

Note: Once the Available Until setting has passed, the quiz will auto-submit, and students will no longer be able to access the quiz.

  2. Constrained Availability – If the Available From and Until settings are set to reflect the same time frame as the Time Limit setting, the Available Until setting can affect a student’s extended time accommodation. It is recommended that you adjust the Available Until setting to allow for the time extension. If you are using constrained availability, you must complete “Step 1: Setting Up the Extended Time” and “Step 2: Adjusting Availability Settings” from the instructions below.

...

Note: Once the Available Until setting has passed, the quiz will auto-submit, and students will no longer be able to access the quiz.

Step 2: Adjusting Availability Settings (If Using Constrained Availability Settings)

For Canvas quizzes with constrained availability, we recommend implementing one of the workarounds provided below to allow students the full length of their extended time accommodation.

Workaround 1: Setting the availability exception for the individual student

  1. After completing Step 1, return to the Quizzes link in the course menu. From the Assignment Quizzes area, select the name of the quiz that you just moderated.

Depiction of Exam selection after navigating to Quizzes.

  2. On the Quiz Details page, select the Edit

    1. Assign to – Here you can specify the student(s) that you would like to add an availability exception for.
    2. Due – Here you can indicate a new due date if desired. When adding exceptions for availability dates, the due date does not have to be updated. If students submit a quiz after the due date, the submission will be marked late.
    3. Available from – Here you can indicate the date that the quiz should become available for the student.
    4. Until – Here you can indicate the date that the quiz should stop being available for the student.

Depiction of values for the Assign section. A. Assign to. B. Due. C. Available From. D. Until.

Note: When making adjustments, it is recommended that the Available from and Until settings reflect the full amount of the student’s extended time, plus a 20-minute buffer to allow for any unforeseen issues.

  5. Once you have set the exception(s) as desired, select Save for the exception(s) to take effect.
