To ensure syllabi are reviewed as part of the Faculty Senate Course Review Process, faculty and staff must create a syllabus using the Canvas Syllabus Sandbox Space. This applies to both new and revised courses.

  • For new courses, the syllabus is created in the sandbox following the steps below.
  • For revised courses, faculty should use the same process by creating a sandbox course and copying an existing syllabus from an enrollment-based course. The revised syllabus must follow the Canvas Syllabus Template guidelines.

Steps to Create a Syllabus in the Canvas Sandbox:

  1. Create a Course in the Sandbox
    • Navigate to the Canvas Course Creation page.
    • Enter the Course Prefix, Course Number, and Additional Instructors (if any, up to two NIDS, separated by commas). Example: john.doe,butch.cougar
    • Click Submit to generate the course space

       2. After submitting, a confirmation message will appear indicating the course has been created. Follow the "click here" link to open the course in Canvas. You can also access your sandbox courses at any time by logging in at http://canvas.wsu.edu and accepting the invitation.

       3. Edit the Syllabus Template

    • Fill in all italicized/highlighted items.
    • Ensure all required syllabus elements are included per WSU Syllabus Requirements.
    • Save your work.

       4. Copy the Syllabus URL

    • The URL is needed as described in the next step

Steps to Submitting the Syllabus for Approval:

Once the syllabus is prepared, it must be submitted through the appropriate curriculum proposal form:

  1. Complete the syllabus in the Canvas Syllabus Sandbox Space.
  2. Go to the New Course Proposal Form.
  3. Fill out the required course details.
  4. Paste the syllabus URL into the designated field.

For Revised Courses

  1. Copy and update the syllabus in the Canvas Syllabus Sandbox Space.
  2. Go to the Revise Course form.
  3. Complete the form, specifying the revisions made to the course.
  4. Paste the syllabus URL into the designated field.

Additional Notes:

  • Ensure all submissions meet the appropriate deadlines for review and approval.
  • Revised courses must follow the Canvas Syllabus Template for consistency.
  • To delete a sandbox course, submit a ticket to the ats.aoi@wsu.edu with the course name of the sandbox.
  • For more information, visit the Curriculum Proposal Forms page.

By following these steps, you can effectively submit syllabi for both new and revised courses, ensuring they undergo the necessary review process.
