What Is the Difference Between Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive?
Microsoft 365 has many tools that help people work together. Three common tools are Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive. They work together, but each one has a different job.
Microsoft Teams
Teams is a tool where people talk and work together.
You can:
- Send messages
- Have video meetings
- Share files with your team
- Work on documents at the same time
Think of Teams like a classroom where everyone can talk and share.
Note: While it looks like your files are in Teams, they not actually stored in Teams.
SharePoint
SharePoint is a place to store files for a whole group.
You can:
- Keep files your team uses
- Organize folders
- Share documents with many people
Think of SharePoint like a library. It holds files that everyone on the team needs.
Note: This is where Teams stores your files.
OneDrive
OneDrive is your personal file space.
You can:
- Store your own work files
- Save drafts
- Share files with one person or a small group
Think of OneDrive like your own desk. It holds your files.
Note: While you can share files from OneDrive, anything meant for long-term group use should be moved to Sharepoint (or into your Teams).
How They Work Together
- You talk and work in Teams.
- Files shared in Teams are stored in SharePoint.
- Your personal files are kept in OneDrive.
