Issue:

Student Turnitin submission returns an error. Resubmitting to Turnitin does not resolve the error.

Solution:

When Turnitin reports fail to run for Canvas assignments using the Plagiarism Review, it's usually due to a blip in service on one side or the other. Turnitin service degradation may be tracked at the following link - Turnitin Service Status. This status page allows you to subscribe for service notifications via email, which the instructor may want to do. These service interruptions may prevent Turnitin from receiving a student's submission from the Canvas assignment and/or prevent Turnitin from generating a report. The "Resubmit to Turnitin" button is the best bet for these types of situations but usually does the trick as long as the service has been restored. The instructor may reach out to tiisupport@turnitin.com or fill out this support form for assistance.

At times it's an issue with the student's uploaded file that causes the failure, but the Speedgrader screen doesn't specify.  One more thing to check if it's just one or two papers that seem to have an issue for the given assignment is the uploaded document itself. Canvas may accept one of the following, but the Turnitin report will just keep failing to generate:

  • The document contained less than 20 words.
  • The document is an image file type (.gif, .jpg, .png, etc.).
  • The document file is corrupted.
  • The document contains more than 800 pages or 2mb of raw text.
